Invisible Space – Sudeep Kumar

I drove to the Irving Art Center to check out my friend’s exhibition. He’s one of the best watercolor artists I know, often painting the backsides of buildings and cityscapes. Though the Irving Art Center is quite a distance from my home, it’s definitely worth the visit. They showcase many amazing pieces of museum-quality artwork! The center has several galleries, and Sudeep’s exhibition was held in the Focus Gallery.

The pieces mainly feature monochrome tones, blending with the concrete wall where meters are typically placed. However, the deep, strong shadows in each painting suggest the presence of intense sunlight—symbolizing hope and happiness.

Another striking element is the use of connected multiple meters, rather than just one, which implies a sense of community and shared existence. In real life, you might not know your neighbors, but through the meters, we are all connected. One of his paintings, Backdoor XVII, subtly hints at this connection by depicting the silhouettes of people behind the artwork.
